How is evolution inconsistent with the creation story in Genesis?
The Theory of Evolution’s mainline belief is that the simple became complex over billions of years. In the Bible’s Creation account, God made complexity first over a 6-day period.
Theories have been created in an attempt to harmonize the two totally opposite accounts. The Day Age Theory states each day of creation was a span of millions of years. Plants couldn’t possibly survive a million years without light, but they could on one day of starlight. The Gap Theory states creation happened up until animals, then evolution took over. And yet, the Bible says man is made in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27), not the evolutionary ladder. Also, the Bible records Eve being made during one nap (Genesis 2:21-22). Mankind couldn't last millions of years to evolve a woman.
The different accounts are not “science versus evolution.” Evolution is not a science. To qualify as a scientific theory, any idea must be testable in a controlled laboratory setting. The experiments run must be capable of being repeated by any other qualified scientist. Science can never make positive statements about historical events of any kind, only investigate current processes. Evolution is really historical speculation based on circular reasoning. For example, evolutionists date fossils by the layered hillside strata they are found in. Geologists in turn date the strata by the fossils they contain.
Evolutionary timeframes change often, but cling roughly to a few billion years. Dating is problematic in that account for there is not enough time for evolution to occur. To make a simple polypeptide protein, Harold F. Blum of Princeton University has calculated that the odds against one of these polypeptides being formed purely by chance is one in one hundred trillion trillion. That is equal to flipping a coin to the same side 10 times in a row a million times. If that coin could be flipped a hundred times a second, it would still take 31 billion years! That doesn’t even include the time needed to evolve from a protein into a human.
Evolution depends on the mutation of cells to evolve to the next level. But, 95% of mutations are harmful and the other 5% could only survive in a lab and never in nature. The developing growth would be a hindrance, and survival of the fittest would weed the mutants out. On the other hand, Creation started at the most complex level. “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31a NIV).
Hundreds of years ago scientists supported the Theory of Spontaneous Generations. Observing fruit flies buzzing around a fallen apple, they concluded the apple regenerated into a fly. Today we laugh at such a thought, but every generation’s scientists have made its life theories based on the limited observational technology of the time. Hundreds of years from now, people will be shaking their heads at our generation’s wild Theory of Evolution.
